TOWSON, Md. - The 22nd-ranked University of Scranton women's soccer team won in a familiar way on Saturday at Goucher, as four different players scored goals and the defense pitched yet another shutout to lead Scranton to a dominating 4-0 win on the road in Landmark Conference play.
With the win, Scranton continues their historic start to the season as they are now 11-0-0 for the first time ever. The Royals also moved to 3-0 in the Landmark Conference with the victory. Goucher dropped to 4-7-0 and 0-3 in the Landmark with the defeat.
In the win Saturday, Scranton put Goucher away quickly, scoring three times in the first 45 minutes of play.
First, sophomore Mary Haggerty (Garden City, N.Y./Garden City) continued her outstanding season with a goal, unassisted, in the 24th minute to give Scranton the early 1-0 edge. For Haggerty, it was her third goal of the year and third tally for the Royals in their last five games.
A little over two minutes later, freshman Emily Bannon (Middletown, N.Y./Minisink Valley) scored the first goal of her career off an assist from sophomore Emily Tantala (Langhorne, Pa./Neshaminy) to make it a 2-0 game. For Tantala, it was her first career assist, as well.
Just before the half, the Royals scored again, as juniorEvelyn Bruggeman (Coatesville, Pa./Bishop Shanahan) scored her second goal of the year (and career), unassisted, to make it a 3-0 Scranton lead heading into the break for halftime.
Just out of the intermission, the Royals scored their final goal of the day, as senior Grace Elliott (Westfield, N.J./Westfield) scored her team-leading sixth goal of the 2021 season to put Scranton up four goals. Sophomore Claire Mulholland (Marlton, N.J./Cherokee) was credited with an assist on the play, her fourth of the season.
The four-goal lead was more than enough for the suffocating Royals defensive unit to work with, as a week after holding Junaita to 0 shots, they held Goucher to just one on Saturday. That shot came in the second half, as senior Hope Drewes (Yardley, Pa./Pennsbury) and the Scranton defense have shut out nine of 11 opponents on the season.
Overall, Scranton outshot Goucher by a wide 23-1 edge and held a 9-1 advantage on corner kicks.
The University of Scranton women's soccer team returns to action on Wednesday, as they head on the road for another Landmark Conference duel, this time at Drew. Action gets underway at 7 p.m.
