Volleyball Rolls Past Arcadia, Falls to No. 10 NYU in Brooklyn

BROOKLYN, N.Y. - Senior Trinity Manning (Point Lookout, N.Y./Kellenberg Memorial) had the best game of her career on the attack, finishing with 12 kills to lead the way, as The University of Scranton volleyball team rolled to a 3-0 victory in the second game of a doubleheader at NYU on Saturday.

In the first game of the day, the Royals dropped a tough 3-1 decision to No. 10 and host NYU. With the split, Scranton is now 19-3 on the year.

After suffering a tough loss to a nationally-ranked opponent, the Royals came out firing against Arcadia, opening up a 2-0 lead after rolling to an eight-point and five-point win in the first two sets, respectively.

In the third set, the Royals rallied from a late deficit. Down 22-21 late, Scranton scored the final four points of regulation, as back-to-back blocks from freshman Erin Keaveney (Collegeville, Pa./Villa Maria Academy) and sophomore Sophia Hadjiyane (Huntington, N.Y. / John Glenn) sealed the deal for the Royals in the three-set sweep, their fourth in the last five games.

Overall in the Arcadia game, Manning went into double-figures for the first time in her career on the attack with her 12-kill performance to lead the Royals. Elsewhere, Keaveney finished with eight kills, while junior Carah Vitkus (Mahopac, N.Y./Mahopac) had seven in the victory. Keaveney was also a force up front for Scranton with four solo blocks and five total in the win.

Elsewhere, senior defensive standout Molly Dunfee (King of Prussia, Pa./Villa Maria Academy) had 22 digs, while junior setter Caileigh Cox (Randolph, N.J./Randolph) finished with 29 assists.

To start the day, the Royals ran into a buzzsaw in undefeated and 10th-ranked NYU, where Scranton had a 12-game winning streak snapped in four sets.

Overall in the defeat to the Violets, Vitkus finished with one of her best games of the year, as she posted her first double-double of the season with 13 kills and 11 digs. Sophomore Stephanie Margolies (Westfield, N.J./Westfield) ended the game with nine kills, while Keaveney had seven. Dunfee finished the game off with 12 kills, while Cox had 30 assists.

The University of Scranton volleyball team returns to action on Friday, as they head to Messiah for another road non-conference game. First serve is set for 7 PM.
