EAST STROUDSBURG, Pa. – The University of Scranton wrestling team held off a late rally from East Stroudsburg and pulled off a 22-21 win over the Warriors in front of a packed house on Thursday night at Koehler Field House in East Stroudsburg.
Scranton improves to 1-0 on the year in dual meets with the win over ESU who drops to 0-1.
Following a pin for East Stroudsburg at 125 pounds, senior Matthew Murawski (Harrington Park, N.J/Northern Valley-Old Tappan) took a major decision at 133 to cut the lead to 6-4. In 141 pound action, junior Anthony Clarizio (Cedar Grove, N.J./Cedar Grove) tacked on three more points for the Royals by taking a 6-1 decision over Brian Lombardi.
Senior Brandon Judge (Eynon, Pa./Valley View) was a winner for the Royals at 149 pounds, pinning Jake Remolina in 1:52 for a 13-6 Scranton lead. A technical fall (16-1) for junior Jeremiah Oakes (Scranton, Pa./Scranton) at 165 and a major decision (16-2) for graduate student William Laughlin (Lansdale, Pa./North Penn) quickly extended the lead to 22-9 for the time being.
This was where the hosts started to rally as East Stroudsburg took the final three matches of the dual meet, but held on for the 22-21 victory.
The Royals return home to host the program's annual Electric City Duals beginning on Sunday morning at 10 a.m. in the John Long Center.
