WILKES-BARRE, Pa. – The University of Scranton wrestling team competed in the Ned McGinley Invitational that was hosted by King's College to open the 2021-22 campaign in Wilkes-Barre.
Following the cancellation of the 2020-21 season due to the COVID-19 pandemic, this marked the first time the Royals have competed against outside competition since the NCAA Mideast Regionals on Feb. 29 and Mar. 1 of 2020.
The Royals finished 12th in the team standings with 35 points as RIT won the team title on the day with a 112 point effort.
Here are some of the highlights for the Royals on Saturday.
- In the 133 pound bracket, senior Matthew Murawski (Harrington Park, N.J./Northern Valley Old-Tappan) reached the quarterfinals as he defeated RIT's Rishabh Jajoo by major decision (11-2) before falling short against Jared Kuhns of York (Pa.).
- At 141 pounds, junior Anthony Clarizio (Cedar Grove, N.J./Cedar Grove) registered a trio of victories to advance to the semifinals in the weight class. Clarizio pinned Southern Virginia's Noah Hoogendoorn in 1:24 and rolled past Delaware Valley's Carter Owen on technical fall (16-0) in the round of 16. In the quarterfinals, the junior picked up a thrilling 9-7 decision over Peter Tringali of Roger Williams.
- Scranton also had four wrestlers advance to the round of 16 in their respective weight class brackets with sophomore Daniel Kosinski (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Trinity) at 157 pounds, junior Jeremiah Oakes (Scranton, Pa./Scranton) and graduate studentWilliam Laughlin (Landsdale, Pa./North Penn) at 174 pounds and senior John Murphy (West Caldwell, N.J./James Caldwell) at 285 pounds.
Scranton returns to the mats for a dual meet at East Stroudsburg on Thursday night with action getting underway at 7 p.m.
