SCRANTON - In what was an absolute battle from the start, Elizabethtown captured a hard-fought, 23-21 decision over The University of Scranton wrestling team on Saturday in the John Long Center.
With the defeat, Scranton dropped to 5-2 on the year in duals, while ETown improved to 2-2 overall. Here are some highlights from the day for the Royals.
- The first victory of the day for Scranton came at 133 pounds, as senior Matthew Murawski (Harrington Park, N.J./Northern Valley - Old Tappan) rolled to an 11-4 victory that put the Royals on the board as a team.
- At 141 pounds, junior Anthony Clarizio (Cedar Grove, N.J./Cedar Grove) rejoined the Scranton line-up in style, by notching a victory by pinfall in 2:51 to give the Royals their first lead of the day (9-4).
- After back-to-back ETown victories put the Blue Jays back ahead (16-9), Scranton won three matches in a row.
- First, at 165, junior Jeremiah Oakes (Scranton, Pa./Scranton) posted one of the most impressive victories of his career, as a late takedown catapulted him to a 4-3 win over ETown's Brian Schneider, who was ranked 10th nationally in his weight class this week.
- Then at 174, graduate student William Laughlin (Lansdale, Pa./North Penn) continued his outstanding season to date by collecting a quick win (1:41) by pinfall to put Scranton back up, 18-16.
- Finally, at 184 pounds, senior Hunter Marhan (Long Branch, N.J./Long Branch) rolled to a 12-9 win to extend the Royals' lead out to 21-16.
- ETown, however, was able to come back in the final two matches of the day and win by decision to collect a thrilling two-point victory over the Royals.
The University of Scranton wrestling team will now be idle through the holiday season and return to action in the New Year, as they head to Ursinus' North-South Duals on Saturday, Jan. 8.
