WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. - In their first action in over a month, The University of Scranton went 2-2 at the Mid-Winter Classic, which was hosted by Penn College on Saturday in Williamsport.
On the afternoon, Scranton got past the host Penn College (37-12) and Thaddeus Stevens College (56-0) but fell to NYU (41-3) and Rhode Island College (24-22). With the results, the Royals moved to 7-4 in duals on the year.
Here are some highlights from the day.
- In the Penn College match, three Royals collected pinfall victories in their respective weight classes. Those Scranton wrestlers were senior Matthew Murawski (Harrington Park, N.J./Northern Valley - Old Tappan) at 133 pounds (2:33), junior Jeremiah Oakes (Scranton, Pa./Scranton) at 165 pounds (5:33) and graduate student William Laughlin (Lansdale, Pa./North Penn) at 174 pounds (4:41).
- Also collecting victories in the Penn College match were senior Brandon Judge (Eynon, Pa./Valley View) at 141 pounds (by decision, 7-3), sophomore Daniel Kosinski (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Trinity) at 157 pounds (by decision, 8-6), and senior Hunter Marhan (Long Branch, N.J./Long Branch) by major decision (12-1) at 184 pounds. Rounding out the victories for the Royals was seniorsStephen Murphy (West Caldwell, N.J./James Caldwell) at 197 pounds (by decision, 5-4) and John Murphy (West Caldwell, N.J./James Caldwell) at 285 pounds (by forfeit).
- The Thaddeus Stevens College match saw the Royals complete a clean sweep of the lineup for their second victory of the day, with most coming via forfeit.
- In the match, Kosinski picked up a big technical fall (20-4) win at 157, while Laughlin collected his second victory via pinfall at 174 (2:39) John Murphy gutted out a 2-1 win at 285, while Oakes collected his second win of the day via forfeit.
- The Rhode Island College match was a tough loss for Scranton to finish off the day, but several Royals still put together some impressive performances.
- Murawski (3:59) and Judge (0:59) won by pinfall in their weight classes, while Oakes collected a 5-2 victory at 165. Senior William Fauerbach (Verona, N.J./Verona) put together an impressive 10-2 major decision win at 174, while Marhan won in a thriller at 184, 3-2.
- The NYU match was a tough one for Scranton, as well, as the only victory in the contest for Scranton was collected by Kosinski at 157, 5-4.
The University of Scranton wrestling team returns to action on Jan. 25 when they travel to Centenary for a dual match. Action gets underway at 7 p.m.
