Laughlin Leads Wrestling on Day One of NCAA Mideast Regionals

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. – Graduate student William Laughlin (Lansdale, Pa./North Penn) notched a pair of victories to advance to the semifinals at 174 pounds for The University of Scranton wrestling team on Day One of the NCAA Mideast Regionals on Saturday.

Laughlin enters Sunday looking to earn a spot in the 2022 NCAA Division III Wrestling Championships that will be held March 11-12 in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.

Sophomore Daniel Kosinski (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Trinity) is also still alive for the Royals at 157 pounds.

The top three finishers in each weight class will qualify for NCAA Championships. 

Here are some of the highlights from the Royals' efforts on Saturday.

  • Laughlin started the day with a 7-1 decision over SUNY Oneonta's Kenneth Sauer and followed that up with a 4-2 decision victory against Mike Galton of Alfred State. He will start the day on Sunday with a semifinal matchup against Demitreus Henry of SUNY Cortland.
  • Kosinski dropped his first match of the day, but rallied to take his next two with pins of Ryan Nugent (Alfred State, 4:04) and Tyler Newton (Pitt-Bradford, 0:41). The 157 pounder will begin action on Sunday with a match versus McDaniel's Xavier Howard.
  • At 133 pounds, senior Matthew Murawski (Harrington Park, N.J./Northern Valley-Old Tappan) started his day with a pin fall victory before eventually succumbing to Ursinus' Romeo Rodriguez in a tight 6-4 decision.
  • Junior Jeremiah Oakes (Scranton, Pa./Scranton) also began his day at 165 pounds with a 7-1 decision over Alfred State's Sean Malenfant, but wound up dropping an 8-6 heartbreaker later in the day to SUNY Oswego's Isaac Mathews.

Day Two of the NCAA Mideast Regionals will get underway on Sunday at 11 a.m.
