Box Score SCRANTON, PA (May 4, 2022) -- The University of Scranton women's lacrosse team earned a dominant 24-13 win over Moravian in the Landmark Conference semifinals on Wednesday evening at Weiss Field.
The Royals (13-5) scored the most goals in a game since 2006 and have now posted eight consecutive wins.
Both sides exchanged goals in the early stages of the game. Scranton sophomore Kayleigh Stalter (Lynbrook, N.Y. / Lynbrook) opened up the scoring in the opening two minutes of action as she scored off an assist from freshman Allie Halfpenny (Mount Laurel, N.J. / Lenape). The Greyhounds kept things close in the first quarter as the Royals held just a one goal lead headed into the second period, 5-4. Freshman Grace Lane (Long Beach, N.Y. / Sacred Heart Academy) led Scranton with three goals in the opening quarter.
The Royals scored three-straight goals to begin the second quarter and extend their lead to four. Moravian was able to cut the lead to just two at the 5:29 mark in the second period as Alex Cherenson found the back of the net. Scranton then went on a 4-0 run to close out the first half and take a 13-7 lead into halftime. During the run, senior Halle Conklin (Point Lookout, N.Y. / Kellenberg Memorial) scored back-to-back goals in the final minutes of the opening half.
Junior Caroline Miller (Huntington, N.Y. / Elwood-John H. Glenn) kept things going for Scranton to start the third period as she scored on a free-position attempt to increase the lead to 14-7. Conklin then scored a free-position goal of her own to secure a hat trick on the night and notch her 100th career point as a Royal. Scranton held a six goal cushion at the end of the third period, leading Moravian 18-12.
The Royals closed out strong in the fourth period, outscoring the Greyhounds 6-1 to complete a 24-13 win in the Landmark Conference semifinals.
Lane led all scorers for Scranton with five goals while Conklin, Stalter, and Halfpenny all added six points each in the win. Freshman goalkeeper Lauren Boldis (Merrick, N.Y. / Sanford H. Calhoun) made 13 saves on 26 shots faced while senior Emily Schum (East Hanover, N.J. / Morris Catholic) and sophomore Nicolina Mauro (South Hempstead, N.Y. / South Side) each recorded three caused turnovers. Scranton went 8-12 on free-position attempts while Moravian went 2-5.
The Royals will now prepare to take on top seeded Catholic in the Landmark Championship game on Saturday afternoon. Action will get underway in Washington, DC at 4:00 PM.
