SCRANTON, Pa. – The University of Scranton wrestling team dropped a pair of dual matches to Penn College and St. John Fisher in the regular season finale on Sunday afternoon at the John Long Center in Scranton.
The Royals finish the regular season with a 7-9 record in dual matches after falling to St. John Fisher 33-18 and Penn College by a score of 44-12.
St. John Fisher 33, Scranton 18
St. John Fisher took an early 17-6 lead after the 157-pound bout before consecutive pins by graduate students Jacob Burgette (Scranton, Pa./Scranton) and Jeremiah Oakes (Scranton, Pa./Scranton) gave the Royals an 18-17 lead for the time being. Burgette took down Jeremy Devine at the 1:09 mark of the first period in the 165-pound bout and Oakes matched the fastest pin of his career as he pinned Ryleigh Duryee in 0:29 at 174 pounds.
Sophomore Kosta Mavrikidis (Warren, N.J./Paramus Catholic) dropped a tough 2-0 decision for Scranton at 149 pounds and St. John Fisher was able to capture the final three bouts of the match.
Penn College 44, Scranton 12
Burgette took down Cavin Napoletano in 2:22 at 165 pounds and Oakes followed by pinning Zach Miller at the 1:28 mark of the first period in the 174-pound bout to highlight the Royals' match versus Penn College.
Prior to the matches, the Royals honored the senior class of Burgette, Oakes, Joseph Cosgrove (Williston Park, N.Y./Chaminade) and Daniel Kosinski (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Trinity).
Scranton returns to action on Mar. 1-2 for the NCAA Mideast Regionals that will be hosted by RIT.
