Graduate student Jeremiah Oakes (Scranton, Pa./Scranton) of The University of Scranton wrestling team matched the program's all-time pins record of 36 as he finished in first place at 174 pounds at the Lycoming Invitational on Sunday and has been named Peggy's Scranton Athlete of the Week for the period ending Feb. 4, 2024.
This marks the fourth time in Oakes' career that he has been named Peggy's Scranton Athlete of the Week, previously winning the award on Jan. 2, 2024, Feb. 14, 2022, and Dec. 13, 2021.
Oakes began the day by pinning Lycoming's Nick Parrella in 2:17 and then defeated New Jersey City's Ryan McGuire in 0:49 to advance to the championship. In the championship match, Oakes secured the first place finish with an 8-2 decision over Pitt-Bradford's Colton Gietler.
Oakes currently sits with 36 career pins, which matches the program record set a season ago by Will Laughlin.
