Sophomore Gisele Falzone of The University of Scranton women's tennis team was named the Landmark Championship MVP after she clinched the winning point for the Royals in Sunday's championship win against top seeded Moravian University. For her efforts, Falzone has been named the Peggy's Scranton Athlete of the Week for the period ending May 4, 2025.
This marks the first career Peggy's Scranton Athlete of the Week award for the Wilkes-Barre, PA native.
Falzone won all of her singles matches in the Landmark Conference Playoffs, winning her first singles match 6-4, 6-1 to contribute to Scranton's first round victory over Juniata College. Falzone captured another singles victory in the semifinals against Goucher University where she won 6-2, 6-0 to contribute to Scranton's victory over the No. 2 seed Goucher College. In the championship match against No. 1 seed Moravian, Falzone recorded the match-winning point for Scranton with a thrilling 7-5, 6-4 win at No. 2 singles.
With the conference championship victory, the Royals secured an automatic bid to the 2025 NCAA DIII women's tennis championships.
Falzone and the Royals will travel to host Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh, PA to take on Stevens Institute of Technology in the opening round of the NCAA Tournament on Thursday, May 8 at 9:00 a.m.
