The University of Scranton women’s lacrosse team learned
today that all good things must come to an end.
After winning all seven previous games against backyard neighbor
Misericordia, the Royals finally had the tables turned against
them, losing a 12-8 decison at Mangelsdorf Field.
Misericordia, now 2-6, offset a 4-goal effort by Royal junior
Emily Goss (Morristown, NJ/Morristown) and
three by senior Kerry Sullivan (Oceanport, NJ/Shore Regional)
with a balanced attack that featured five players scoring at least
two goals.
Junior Melina Juliano (Putnam Valley, NY/Putnam Valley) led the
Cougars with three goals and senior Kate Pagnotta (Columbus,
NJ/Northern Burlington Regional), junior Erin Baker (Sicklerville,
NJ/Paul VI), sophomore Alexandra Elmes (Hopewell Junction, NY/John
Jay), and freshman Liz Mulvey (Green Brook, NJ/Rutgers Preparatory)
added two apiece.
The Cougars put together two key rallies when they needed them
most.
Juliano scored twice during a 4-1 rally that turned a 2-1 deficit
into a confidence-building 5-3 halftime lead. Then, after the
Royals fought back and tied it up behind two goals apiece by Goss
and Sullivan midway through the second half, Baker scored both of
her goals during a 5-0 run over a 14-minute span that put the game
out of reach.
Freshman goalkeeper Jenn Gadzick (Farmingville, NY/Sachem East)
made six saves for Misericordia while junior Emily
Towey (Abington, Pa./Abington) finished with 10 for
Scranton.
Sullivan’s three goals today moved her into eighth place on
the Royals’ all-time scoring list with 159 points (133 goals,
26 assists), while Goss’s four goals gives her 112, the
seventh most in Scranton history. Sullivan is now fifth
all-time in Scranton history in goals scored.
The Royals will host Elizabethtown College in Landmark Conference
action this Saturday, March 29, beginning at 1:00 p.m. at
Fitzpatrick Field. Admission is free.
