WILKES-BARRE, Pa. – Junior Ian Evans (Laurys Station, Pa./Parkland) posted a trio of dominant victories at 157 pounds as The University of Scranton wrestling team finished 1-2 at the New York/Pennsylvania Duals on Saturday afternoon at King's College.
The Royals (3-2) suffered a 29-10 loss to Merchant Marine Academy and a 32-9 loss to New York University and posted a 40-9 victory over Hunter.
Evans was impressive all day, posting a 10-0 major decision over Christian Willoughby of Merchant Marine Academy, a 4-0 decision over NYU's Ray Jazikoff, and pinning Hunter's Sheraz Noory in 2:10. The three victories give Evans 69 for his career, which ties him for sixth in program history.
Sophomore Nicholas DePierro (Manalapan, N.J./Freehold) had wins at 125 pounds in the first two matches. He earned 7-6 decisions over both Mike Mui of Merchant Marine Academy and Wayne Yuan of NYU.
Junior Eric Calimano (Randolph, N.J./Randolph) also had two wins on the mat at 285 pounds, picking up a 9-5 decision over Merchant Marine Academy's Brandon Joest and a 6-4 decision over NYU's Santino Pelusi. Calimano also earned a win by forfeit against Hunter.
In the win over Hunter, Scranton also received an 8-4 decision at 149 pounds from freshman Daniel O'Neill (Flanders, N.J./Mount Olive), a 7-2 decision at 165 pounds from sophomore Zachary D'Apolito (Wayne, N.J./Wayne Valley Senior) and a 14-3 major decision at 174 pounds from freshman Kevin Merle (Stroudsburg, Pa./Belvidere).
The Royals will be back on the mats on Saturday, Nov. 21, when they compete in the McDaniel Duals at McDaniel College in Westminster, Md.
