CLARKS SUMMIT, Pa. - Freshman Kristin Kirwan (Park Ridge, N.J./Immaculate Heart Academy) had a match-high eight kills to lead the attack, as the University of Scranton volleyball team registered their eighth win in their last nine matches at Summit on Tuesday night, sweeping through the host Defenders in three sets (25-9, 25-5, 25-19).
With the victory, Scranton improved to 10-2 overall on the year, while Summit fell to 1-9 with the loss.
In the first two sets of action, Scranton took huge leads in the middle of each game to pull away, going up 17-8 in the first set and 17-3 in the second set to coast to a 2-0 lead.
In the third set, Summit grabbed an early 8-5 lead over Scranton, and continued to battle the Royals throughout the game, with the set coming to a head tied up at 17-all. Here, the Royals took back control of the match to finish off the victory, ending on a 8-2 run to cap off the straight set sweep on the road.
Overall, Kirwan once again led the Royal attack with her eight-kill evening, as the freshman hit .636 in the victory.
Fellow freshman Catherine Manning (Eastchester, N.Y./Eastchester) and senior Molly Loftus (Mount Carmel, Pa./Our Lady of Lourdes) added five kills, apiece, while junior setter Brittany Cafiero (Merrick, N.Y./Kellenberg Memorial) recorded another double-digit assist match with 14. Cafiero has now gone over 1,400 assists for her career and needs only six more to tie for seventh all-time in program history in the category.
Elsewhere, junior Bailey Woods (Wallingford, Pa./Strath Haven) added 11 assists and led the Royal defense on the night with seven digs, as well.
It'll be a quick turnaround for the University of Scranton volleyball team, as they Royals head to Cortland State Wednesday for another out-of-conference match. First serve is set for 6 p.m.
