The University of Scranton wrestling team welcomed a pair of tough opponents to the Long Center on Sunday afternoon and came out even, defeating Centenary, 27-23, before falling to Ursinus, 34-6.
Scranton (7-6) opened the day by battling Centenary for eight matches until taking advantage of a pair of forfeits at the final two weight classes to pull out the win. Junior Ian Evans (Laurys Station, Pa./Parkland) picked up his 22nd win of the season when he pinned Centenary senior Allan Jordan (Port Reading, N.J./Woodbridge) in 2:07 at 157 pounds. It was Evans' fifth pin of the season and the 83rd victory of his career.
The Royals also received a 9-2 decision at 184 pounds from freshman Daniel D'Agostini (Allentown, Pa./Allentown Central Catholic). Sophomore Nicholas DePierro (Manalapan, N.J./Freehold) won by injury default at 133 pounds when his opponent suffered an injury in the first period with DePierro ahead, 2-0.
Forfeit wins by juniors Salvatore Montuori (Clark, N.J./Arthur Johnson Regional) at 197 and Eric Calimano (Randolph, N.J./Randolph) at 285 clinched the win for Scranton.
The victory against Centenary was also the 40th of head coach Al Russomano's career, moving him into second all-time on the Royals' coaching list. John Hopkins holds the school record for coaching victories with 183.
In the loss to Ursinus, D'Agostini picked up a 10-6 decision at 184 pounds over Ursinus's Nickolas Suk (Flemington, N.J./Hunterdon Central), and Calimano earned a 5-2 decision at 285 pounds over Zebulin Pfeiffer (Pequea, Pa./Penn Manor).
