DALLAS, Pa. – The University of Scranton women's lacrosse team ran off 11 straight goals en route to a 14-3 win over Misericordia in the Royals' season opener at Mangelsdorf Field on Thursday evening.
Scranton (1-0) was led by junior midfielder Meghan Kerr (Warwick, N.Y./John S. Burke Catholic), who had six goals and an assist, and freshman attacker Elena Gallo (East Meadow, N.Y./Kellenberg Memorial), who had three goals in her collegiate debut.
The teams traded goals over the first 10 minutes and found themselves tied at 3 with a little less than 16 minutes left in the first half. Scranton then got unassisted goals by Gallo and Kerr to take a 5-3 lead into halftime.
The second half was all Royals as they outscored the Cougars, 9-0. Gallo scored 31 seconds into the half to spark a run of five goals in the first 6:21 of the half.
Scranton also received a goal and an assist each from senior midfielder Erin Allen (Syosset, N.Y./Our Lady of Mercy Academy), freshman attacker Katie Rogers (Huntington, N.Y./St. Anthony's) and freshman midfielder Christine Olert (Katonah, N.Y./Somers). Sophomore attacker Morgan Windisch (Williston, N.Y./Sacred Heart Academy) and freshman midfielder Paige Stoessel (Smithtown, N.Y./Smithtown East) each had a goal, and senior midfielder Fiona Keelan (New Rochelle, N.Y./Mamaroneck) added an assist.
Scranton had a 37-14 edge in shots and a 39-28 lead in ground balls. The Royals were also successful on 11 of 12 clear attempts. Sophomore Amanda Trumpore (Warren, N.J./Watchung Hills) and junior Marne Rosetti (Wayne, N.J./Wayne Hills) combined for six saves in goal.
Scranton is back in action on Saturday when the Royals host Haverford at noon in the home opener at Fitzpatrick Field.
