ASTON, Pa. – The University of Scranton volleyball team suffered a pair of non-conference setbacks on Saturday to close the Knights Invitational.  The Royals (8-6) dropped a four-set decision to NYU in Saturday's opener before falling to host Neumann in five sets.  

Sophomore defensive specialist Regina Schetroma (Downingtown, Pa./Downingtown West) was selected to the All-Tournament Team after totaling 74 digs, 16 assists, and eight aces during this weekend's tournament.

Match 1 vs. NYU

In Saturday's opener, the Violets (9-3) won the opening set 25-16 before Scranton leveled the match with a 25-21 victory in game two.  NYU responded with triumphs of 25-22 and 25-19 in sets three and four to win the match.

Kristin Kirwan (Park Ridge, N.J./Immaculate Heart Academy) had 15 kills and 10 digs while Jillian Graham (Wantagh, N.Y./Wantagh) added 11 kills for the Royals, who hit .120 as a team.

Schetroma led five Royals in double-figure digs, tying for a match-high with 21.  Megan Monastra (West Chester, Pa./Villa Maria Academy) (17), Kindler Norman (Pittsburgh, Pa./Upper St. Clair) (13), and Kristin Bush (Cortland, N.Y./Cortland) (11) also posted double-digit digs.

Norman rounded out her double-double with a match-high 38 assist to go along with a pair of aces, tying for the team-lead with Eryn Boken (South Pasadena, Calif./Westridge School for Girls).

Catherine Manning (Eastchester, N.Y./Eastchester) totaled a team-best four blocks in the contest.

NYU hit .214 as a team in the win and held an 81-73 edge in digs in the match.

Match 2 vs. Neumann

In their final match of the tournament against the host Knights (7-7), Scranton won the opening set 25-21 before Neumann rallied with wins of 25-21 and 25-23 to take a 2-1 advantage.  The Royals used a 25-21 win in game four to force a fifth set, which the Knights claimed, 15-10.

Kirwan again led Scranton's attack with 16 kills, Kate Calabro (Seaford, N.Y./Kellenberg Memorial) put down 13 kills, and Boken added 10 kills in the loss. 

Norman dished out 40 assists and finished tied with Molly Dunfee (King of Prussia, Pa./Villa Maria Academy) for the team-lead in digs with 14.

Schetroma collected 13 digs and had a team-best three aces while Kirwan had 11 digs for her second double-double of the day.

Boken led the Royals at the net with three blocks against the Knights, who hit .193 for the match versus a .184 effort for Scranton.

Up Next

Scranton will travel to Providence, Rhode Island next weekend for the Johnson & Wales Invitational, opening the tournament against the hosts at 5 p.m. on Friday before taking on Wesleyan and Bowdoin on Saturday.
