PROVIDENCE R.I. – The University of Scranton volleyball team dropped matches to a pair of teams receiving votes in the most recent AVCA national top 25 rankings on Saturday to close out the JWU Invitational hosted by Johnson & Wales.  The Royals (8-9) were defeated by Wesleyan in four sets in Saturday's first match before falling in a three-set decision to Bowdoin in the nightcap.

Match 1 vs. Wesleyan

In Saturday's opening match, Scranton won the first set, 25-22, but the Cardinals (7-1) reel off three straight wins (25-15, 25-16, and 25-17), to defeat the Royals.

Senior Megan Monastra (West Chester, Pa./Villa Maria Academy) posted a match-high 14 kills while leading Scranton with 14 digs in the match.  Senior Kristin Kirwan (Park Ridge, N.J./Immaculate Heart Academy) added 11 kills and tied with Monastra for a match-high with three aces.

Sophomore Kindler Norman (Pittsburgh, Pa./Upper St. Clair) put up a match-best 34 assists in the loss.

Kirwan, sophomore Kristin Bush (Cortland, N.Y./Cortland), and sophomore Regina Schetroma (Downingtown, Pa./Downingtown West) picked up 10 digs apiece for the Royals while senior Catherine Manning (Eastchester, N.Y./Eastchester) added a pair of blocks.

Scranton hit .136 as a team in the loss while Wesleyan recorded a .272 hitting percentage as a squad in the match.

Match 2 vs. Bowdoin

In Saturday's second match, the Polar Bears (11-0) remained undefeated on the season by sweeping the Royals with set wins of 25-19, 25-21, and 25-20.

Monastra and Kirwan led Scranton's attack with seven kills apiece while Norman added 13 assists and five kills. 

Monastra rounded out her second double-double of the day with 10 digs while Kirwan and Bush picked up seven digs apiece. 

Sophomore Kyra Bevenour (Sicklerville, N.J./Washington Township) added seven assists while freshman Eryn Boken (South Pasadena, Calif./Westridge School for Girls) paced the squad with a pair of blocks.

As a team, Scranton hit .155 against Bowdoin, which logged a .281 showing on its attacks in the victory.

Up Next

Scranton will look to snap a six-match losing skid on Wednesday in a non-conference match at Oneonta starting at 6 p.m.
