SCRANTON - Senior guard Jackson Danzig (Clarks Green, Pa./Abington Heights) led the way with 20 points and became the 47th player in University of Scranton men's basketball program history to score his 1,000th career point, as the Royals pulled away from visiting Moravian in the second half, taking an 82-68 Landmark Conference victory in the John Long Center on Wednesday evening.
With the win, Scranton captured their fifth straight overall to move to 9-5 overall and 3-1 in the Landmark Conference. Moravian dropped to 7-8 and 2-3 in the Landmark with the loss.
The first half of Wednesday's game was defensive-minded and saw Moravian keep a lead throughout, which eventually grew to 23-16 with five minutes remaining in the period.
But, Scranton slowly clawed their way back in it, quickly going on a 6-0 run to slice the Moravian lead down to 23-22. After a made basket by the Greyhounds to stop the spurt, the Royals ended the half on a tear, as a 9-0 run gave Scranton a 31-25 lead at intermission.
Once the Royals grabbed a lead in the game, they never looked back the rest of the contest.
Keeping Moravian at arm's length through the first eight minutes of the second half, the Royals put the Greyhounds away with a 13-3 run that extended out a five-point lead (45-40) to a 15-point edge (58-43) with nine minutes to go in regulation.
This deficit proved to be too much for Moravian to come back from the rest of the game, as the closest the Greyhounds came to Scranton in the final minutes was nine points on three separate occasions. Down the stretch, the Royals coasted, clinching a double-digit conference win and their eighth of the year at home in the Long Center.
Overall, Danzig led the way with his 20-point performance, as 16 of those points came in the second half. Danzig also pulled down five rebounds, had three steals, and dished out two assists in the victory.
With a made free throw with 14:14 left in the game, Danzig reached the 1,000 career point milestone, becoming the fifth Danzig to accomplish the feat in their respective careers. Older brothers Ethan (1,168) and Ross (1,793) accomplished the feat while student-athletes at Scranton. Father and Royals head coach Carl (1,732) accomplished the feat while at Baker (Kan.) and grandfather Harold (1,163) did it during his playing days at Bucknell.
Elsewhere, sophomore Tahaj Parland (Neptune, N.J./Mater Dei) had the best game of his career at Scranton, scoring 18 points on 7-of-10 shooting from the floor and 4-of-4 shooting from three-point range. Junior Stephen Braunstein (Colts Neck, N.J./Christian Brothers Academy) finished with 15 points, while freshman Will McLoughlin (Glen Rock, N.J./Glen Rock) once again scored in double-figures off the bench with 13 points.
Moravian was led in the loss by Danny Cooper, who had 21 points.
The University of Scranton men's basketball team returns to action on Saturday, as they host Elizabethtown at home in Landmark Conference action. Tip-off is set for 2 p.m.
