Royal Reflection shines a light on the senior student-athletes who embody what it means to be a Royal. In this edition, we feature Matt Hanley of The University of Scranton men's basketball team as he reflects on the moments that defined his time as a Royal.

Favorite Scranton memory?

  • Winning the landmark championship and going to the Round of 32 in the NCAA tournament my freshman year.

One lesson Scranton athletics taught you?

  • Show up every day and do your job. Consistency and accountability matter more than anything.

Pregame or pre-competition ritual you'll miss most?

  • Listening to music in the locker room on the speaker before the game with everyone.

Teammate who made the biggest impact on you?

Best advice you've received during your career?

  • Control what you can control your effort, your attitude, and your preparation.

What does being a Royal mean to you?

  • It means representing something bigger than yourself playing with pride, toughness, and for your teammates next to you.

What are you most proud of from your time at Scranton?

  • The relationships I built with teammates, coaches and the growth I made both on and off the court.

What's next after graduation?

  • Continuing my education by pursuing an MBA. 

What surprised you most about yourself this past season?

  • My ability to adapt and lead in different ways, finding ways to impact the team every day through preparation, communication, and attention to detail.

How do you hope to be remembered by your coaches and your teammates? 

  • As someone who was dependable, worked hard every day, and always put the team first.
