SCRANTON - Senior guard Jackson Danzig (Clarks Green, Pa./Abington Heights) scored a career-high 34 points to lead the way, as The University of Scranton men's basketball team outscored Elizabethtown by 15 points (45-30) in the second half to take an 85-72 decision in Landmark Conference play Saturday at the John Long Center.
With the victory, Scranton won their sixth straight overall to move to 10-5 overall and 4-1 in the Landmark Conference. ETown dropped to 6-9 and 1-4 in the Landmark with the defeat.
In the win, ETown went into halftime holding a slim 42-40 lead over the Royals after a nip and tuck first 20 minutes of action. But, out of the locker room, the Blue Jays attacked, opening a 49-41 lead on the Royals in the first two and a half minutes of the second half.
That lead held for ETown until the 12-minute mark when Scranton began their comeback.
After an 11-2 run tied the game up at 52-52, it remained close between the teams until ETown held a 56-55 lead with 10 minutes left. Here, the Royals went on a game-changing tear, as a 14-0 scoring rally gave Scranton an insurmountable 69-56 lead with six minutes left in regulation.
From there, ETown was unable to make it much of a game, as the Royals held a double-digit lead the rest of the contest to roll to their ninth win of the year in the Long Center (Scranton is now 9-1 on the year at home).
Overall, Danzig took the game over late in the second half on his way to recording the best scoring contest of his career. The 34-point effort (on 12-of-21 shooting from the floor) just passed a 32-point effort for the senior guard back on Nov. 23 as the highest-scoring game of his Royals career. Danzig also finished with six rebounds and six assists in the victory, as well.
Elsewhere, freshman Will McLoughlin (Glen Rock, N.J./Glen Rock) once again came off the bench and scored in double-figures, finishing with 16 points on 6-of-8 shooting from the floor, while pulling down five rebounds. For McLoughlin, it marked the fifth straight game in which he has come off the Royals bench and scored in double-figures.
Scranton's only other double-digit scorer in the win was sophomore Tahaj Parland (Neptune, N.J./Mater Dei) who finished with 10 points. Elizabethtown was led in the loss by Jalin Robinson, who had 20 points.
The University of Scranton men's basketball team returns to action on Wednesday, as they travel to Drew for a key Landmark Conference match-up. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m.
