MADISON, N.J. - Senior Jackson Danzig (Clarks Green, Pa./Abington Heights) scored a game-high 19 points for The University of Scranton men's basketball team at Drew on Wednesday night, but it wasn't enough, as the host Rangers pulled away in the second half to take a 66-58 decision over the Royals in Landmark Conference action.
With the loss, Scranton had a six-game winning streak snapped, falling to 10-6 overall and 4-2 in the Landmark, Drew improved to 12-6 and 6-1 in the Landmark with the victory.
After a back-and-forth first half that saw Drew take a slim 34-32 lead into intermission over Scranton, the Rangers took control early in the second half, opening a 41-34 lead on the Royals three and half minutes into the second period.
Once Drew took that lead, they never really looked back the rest of the contest, as they eventually opened an insurmountable 53-40 lead with 10 minutes left over the Royals.
The closest Scranton came to the Drew lead the rest of the way was four points (62-58) with a minute left, as the Rangers salted the game away at the free throw line in the final minute to take an eight-point victory over the Royals in which they outscored Scranton, 32-26, in the second half.
Overall in the defeat, Danzig was impressive yet again for Scranton with his 19 point effort, scoring in double-figures for the 12th time on the year and the ninth time in the last 10 games for the Royals.
Elsewhere, freshman Will McLoughlin (Glen Rock, N.J./Glen Rock) was once again a force off the Royals' bench, scoring 12 points, while snatching six rebounds. It marked the sixth straight game in which McLoughlin came off the bench and scored in double-digits for Scranton.
Rounding out the double-digit scorers for the Royals was juniors Ryan Ems (Voorhees, N.J./Eastern Regional) and Stephen Braunstein (Colts Neck. N.J./Christian Brothers Academy), who had 10 points apiece.
Drew was led in the win by Malcolm Newman, who had 16 points.
The University of Scranton men's basketball team returns to action on Saturday, as they travel to Juniata in Landmark action. Tip-off is set for 2 p.m.
