HUNTINGDON, Pa. - Host Juniata opened a nine-point lead at halftime and never looked back on Saturday against The University of Scranton men's basketball team, taking a 70-62 decision over the Royals in Landmark Conference action.
With the defeat, Scranton dropped to 10-7 overall and 4-3 in the Landmark Conference, while Juniata improved to 11-6 and 4-2 in the Landmark with the victory.
From the start on Saturday, Juniata held the lead over Scranton, as the Eagles went up, 19-9 in the first 10 minutes of action in the opening half. The closest the Royals came to the Juniata lead from that point on in the half was five points (25-20 with 5:40 left), as the Eagles took a 37-28 lead into intermission.
To start the second half, Juniata essentially put Scranton away for the afternoon with a quick 6-0 run that gave the Eagles a 43-31 lead just a minute and a half into the final period. From that point on, the Royals were unable to get back in it, as the closest they came to the Juniata lead the rest of the game was six points (56-50 with 8:32 left).
Down the stretch, Juniata was able to extinguish any Scranton comeback bid quickly, as they took an insurmountable 63-53 lead with four minutes left, then coasted down the stretch for the eight-point conference victory.
Overall in the loss for Scranton, senior Jackson Danzig (Clarks Green, Pa./Abington Heights) was impressive, scoring a game-high 23 points, while pulling down eight rebounds. Danzig, who scored in double-figures for the 14th time and at least 20 points for the ninth time on the year, also went a perfect 9-for-9 from the free throw line in the defeat.
Elsewhere, freshman Will McLoughlin (Glen Rock, N.J./Glen Rock) and junior Ryan Ems (Voorhees, N.J./Eastern Regional) were Scranton's second-highest scorers with nine points, apiece.
The University of Scranton men's basketball team returns to action on Wednesday night, traveling to Moravian. The Landmark Conference match-up begins at 7 p.m.
