Box Score SCRANTON, Pa. – The University of Scranton men's basketball team (12-7, 6-3 Landmark) shot a blistering 66.7% (38-of-57) from the floor and rolled to a 95-60 win over the Goucher Gophers (3-17, 0-10 Landmark) in Landmark Conference action on Saturday afternoon at the John Long Center in Scranton.
The 66.7% field goal percentage is tied for the fourth best in a single game in program history and the highest for the Royals since shooting 68.3% in a 75-73 win over Wilkes on Jan. 3, 2015.
Scranton's strong shooting performance was highlighted by a perfect 7-of-7 day from junior Stephen Braunstein (Colts Neck, N.J./Christian Brothers Academy) who buried a career-high six three-pointers.
Goucher took a 9-5 lead in the early stages of the first half and following a Royals timeout, a Jackson Danzig (Clarks Green, Pa./Abington Heights) layup ignited an 18-8 run and a Braunstein three gave the hosts a 23-17 lead at the 11:30 mark of the opening stanza. The Gophers once again trailed by six at 27-21 when sophomore Tahaj Parland (Neptune, N.J./Mater Dei) made a three to kickstart a 13-0 run that extended the lead to 40-21 with 5:13 remaining and the Royals eventually took a 54-29 lead into the locker room.
Things were academic for Scranton in the second half as Goucher got within 20 points just once as Nieko White hit a layup to cut the lead to 69-51 with 12:21 to play. From there, Danzig, a senior, converted a three-point play to fuel a 17-3 run over the next six plus minutes and fellow senior Peter Hartrick (Binghamton, N.Y./Seton Catholic Central) hit a layup of his own on the back end of the run for an 86-54 advantage at the 5:26 mark.
Braunstein led all scorers with 21 points on his 7-of-7 shooting day, while Danzig added 19 points on 8-of-10 from the floor and freshman Will McLoughlin (Glen Rock, N.J./Glen Rock) hit 6-of-7 from the floor for 12 points. Danzig also chipped in with eight assists and five rebounds in the victory.
To go along with the 66.7% shooting clip from the field, the Royals also connected on 13-of-26 (50.0%) from beyond the arc and Goucher was 25-of-48 (52.1%) from the floor.
The Royals held a 26-20 edge in the rebounding battle led by six from Hartrick and five apiece from Danzig and McLoughlin.
Scranton continues a three-game homestand on Monday night as Juniata comes to town for a Landmark Conference tilt with opening tip slated for 7 p.m.
