Senior forward Brendan Boken (South Pasadena, Calif./Loyola) led four players in double figures with a game-high 19 points as The University of Scranton men's basketball team opened the 2015-16 season with a 94-68 victory over Bryn Athyn in the opening day of the Hilton Scranton Invitational in the John Long Center.
Scranton (1-0) also received 13 points from sophomore guard Mitch Cross (Marriottsville, Md./Loyola-Blakefield/West Virginia Wesleyan) and 11 each from senior guard Marcus Thomas (Clarksburg, Md./Clarksburg) and sophomore guard Ethan Danzig (Clarks Green, Pa./Abington Heights).
The victory marked the 12th straight victory in a season opener for the Royals, who are now 13-2 in the opening game of a season under head coach Carl Danzig.
Scranton wasted little time taking control as Ethan Danzig made a trio of 3-pointers to open the game and Boken capped the run with a layup to give Scranton an 11-0 lead just 3:04 into the game. The Royals kept on scoring for the remainder of the half, taking a 51-21 lead into the break by shooting 59.4 percent from the field and 52.9 percent from 3-point range.
Boken and Danzig each had 11 in the first half, and junior center John Vitkus (Mahopac, N.Y./Mahopac) had six points and 10 rebounds.
Bryn Athyn (0-1) got no closer than the final margin of 26 the rest of the way as Scranton continued to shoot the ball well, going 18-for-34 (52.9 percent) from the field in the second half.
Vitkus finished the night with eight points and 12 rebounds, and sophomore forward Brandon Feinberg (Avon, Conn./Avon/Suffield Academy) added eight points off the bench. Boken finished with five rebounds, four assists, two blocks and a steal to go along with his 18 points, and sophomore guard Kevin Doolan (Basking Ridge, N.J./Ridge) finished with five points, six assists and three steals.
Eleven different players scored for Scranton, which finished the game at 56.1 percent from the floor, including 43.8 percent (14-for-32) from 3-point range. Danzig, Thomas and Cross finished with three made 3-pointers each.
The Royals will face Ursinus in Saturday's championship game at 4 p.m. in the Long Center. Bryn Athyn will take on Stevens Tech in the third-place game at 2 p.m. Ursinus held off Stevens Tech, 83-80, in Friday's opening game.
